Gilbert Chase, the American music historian, critic and musicologist, provided a Foreword for the book. Below is his opening paragraph written in 1974:

Today, more than one hundred years since his birth, and twenty years after his death,¹ Charles Ives is still the great enigma of American music. While the extraordinary originality and communicative power of his music are universally acknowledged, the man himself remains largely a mystery, and his relation to American culture a subject of continuing controversy.
